Blythe Hartley Hurd

Age 95 ~ former Haddonfield resident currently living at The Evergreens in Moorsetown, NJ

Passed away on Dec. 5, 2020, at the age of 95. She was pre-deceased by her beloved husband Charles E. “Chuck” Hurd (2015). She was the loving mother of Randall Hurd (Patricia) of Mankato, MN, Peter Hurd (Lisa) of Haddonfield, and Robin Rheiner (Jack) of Wycombe, PA; and dear grandmother of Kirby, Erin, Sam, Doug, Rita, Lindsay, Tim, Emily and Paul. She is also survived by a niece, nephew, and many friends.

Blythe (“Bunnie,” as she became known to friends) was born and raised in Washington, DC. She graduated from Penn State University in 1946, and went to work at the Georgetown University Veterans Administration Guidance Center.  In 1948, she married Chuck Hurd, whom she had met a few years earlier while they were both Penn State students.  They moved to Haddonfield in 1953, where they would stay until re-locating to the Evergreens in 2009.

After her own children had grown more independent, Bunnie took a job as lead nursery school teacher at the United Methodist Church of Haddonfield, a position she held for 23 years.  Parents of kids she taught would see Bunnie years later and thank her for her caring approach and effective teaching methods.

She was always a very empathic person who put the needs of others before her own.

Bunnie was an active volunteer in the League of Women Voters, American Field Service (a foreign-exchange student service), Interfaith Caregivers, the Y’s Menettes (a branch of the Haddonfield Y’s Men’s Club), and the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield, where she sang in the Chancel Choir for 40 years, and worked with the Women’s Prison Ministry.

In her retirement years, Bunnie followed her passions: continuing her volunteer work, traveling, and spending time with her grandchildren during the family’s annual vacation week at the Jersey shore.

Bunnie will be remembered for her gentleness, kindness, empathy, unwavering commitment to helping others, her skill as a seamstress, and her arts & crafts talents.

Interment will be private.  A memorial service will be planned for a later date. When a service date is available, this notice will be updated.

Donations in Bunnie’s memory may be sent to: Interfaith Caregivers, PO Box 186, Haddonfield, NJ 08033 (www.ifchaddons.org/donate) or the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield, 20 E. Kings Hwy., Haddonfield, NJ 08033.
