Rachel Ann Avery

(born to Alban and Leona Paradis in 1945) went to be with her Savior on April 2, 2020 in Cherry Hill, NJ at the age of 75 after a very short battle with what is suspected to have been the coronavirus COVID-19.    Rachel Ann was the beloved wife of Ivan Avery who passed in August 2019.  She is survived by her two sons, two step-daughters and nine grandchildren:  Steven and his wife Michele Lloyd of Knoxville, TN and their children Trevor and Brooke; Jim and his wife Lynda Lloyd of Ringwood, NJ and their children Hope, Charlie, Grace, Jackson and Josie; Renee and her husband Chris Boyd of Berwyn, PA; and Lindsay and her husband Chris Lucente and their children Aiden and Summer.

Rachel Ann was born and raised in Van Buren, ME as the youngest of six siblings including her brother Donald and his wife Bella Paradis of VA. and is predeceased by her brothers the late Danny, Ken and Robert Paradis and her late sister Elaine Cyr. Rachel Ann and her husband Ivan were forty-year residents of Cherry Hill and longtime members of the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield.  They enjoyed driving their antique cars in the Haddonfield parades for decades.  Rachel Ann loved Jesus, was very active with Meals on Wheels and led bible studies throughout Camden County.  She was well known for her oversized chocolate chip cookies, her big heart, her wild sense of humor, infectious smile and her desire to serve others.

Rachel Ann’s interment will be held privately in light of the restrictions on gatherings due to the virus.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations in memory of Rachel Ann to the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield, 124 Kings Highway East, Haddonfield, NJ 08033.

Joe Baltake

Film critic for nearly 40 years in Philadelphia and Sacramento CA and author of the film blog The Passionate Moviegoer, died peacefully at his Haddonfield NJ home on March 26, of complications from multiple myeloma; he was 74.

Joe was born and raised in Camden NJ, where his parents owned Baltake Bakery. As small business owners, they worked many long hours, leaving Joe to entertain himself by going to the aptly-named Liberty Theatre… and so began his lifelong passion.  After graduation from Rutgers University he began his professional reviewing career at Gannett’s suburban newspaper group, and continued at Knight-Ridder’s The Philadelphia Daily News and McClatchy’s The Sacramento Bee. He was first-string critic at both dailies, reviewing more than 10,000 movies. He also wrote for The Los Angeles Times, The New York Post, Us magazine and Films in Review; and served on several film festival juries.

Baltake was a biographer of the actor Jack Lemmon, whom he had admired as a teen, and authored The Films of Jack Lemmon and Jack Lemmon: His Films and Career. He was an associate editor of John Willis’ Screen World anthology from 1973 to 1993; wrote the afterword for “The Films of Burt Reynolds” and contributed commentaries to DVD sets, including on-camera interviews for The Jack Lemmon Film Collection and The Apartment collector edition. Joe won multiple awards for his columns but as a longtime animal activist, was most proud of being honored by the Performing Animal Welfare Society in 1995 for a column on the film industry’s mistreatment of animals, both simulated and real. He is survived by wife Susan Baltake, sister Rose Brazier and niece Cindi Frese, both of Turnersville NJ, and several other nieces and nephews, as well as his beloved rescue cats. Martin L. Knodle, Jr.

On March 25, 2020, Age 81, Passed away peacefully after a long hard-fought battle with cancer.  Beloved husband for 53 years of the late Judith (Ann Ebensperger); He leaves behind his three beloved sons, Martin, David, and Scott and his two grandchildren, Sierra and David and others who he loved dearly.

Martin, a US Army veteran (66-68), he listened and watched everything NPR, loved art, reading the Sunday NY Times, discussions about current affairs and watching the Philadelphia Phillies.

Patricia F. Rutter

(nee Padgett) On March 24, 2020 Age 68; of Westmont, NJ. Beloved wife of 49 years of Harry “Bud” Rutter of Westmont; Devoted mother of Tricia (Michael) Lippincott of Haddon Township; Colleen (Jim) Carroll of Haddonfield and Craig (Maureen) of Berlin; Loving Mimi of Olivia, Jacob & Abby Lippincott, Andrew, Lily & Harrison Carroll, and Charley & Carson Rutter. She is survived by her sister Ruthanne Beyea. Pat is predeceased by her parents Walter and Ruthanna Padgett and brothers Robert and Richard Padgett.

She resided in Westmont for the last 46 years. She grew up in the Barclay Farms section of Cherry Hill where she was a 1969 Graduate of Cherry Hill West High School. She worked for Cardio Data and Associated Cardiovascular Consultants both in Haddonfield for many years and more recently Lourdes Medical Associates (LMA) and then Virtua both in Haddon Heights, where she was the cash application specialist. Pat was happiest when she was with her family either at home or in Ocean City and she was so very proud of her eight grandchildren. She was an avid Phillies and Eagles fan, loved to decorate her house and kept QVC in business.

Marion D. Cordier

(nee Dickerson) On March 20, 2020; Age 96; of Ocean City, NJ and Naples, FL; Beloved wife of 50 yrs. to the late Ray H.; Devoted mother of  Ray of Medford, NJ, David of Haddonfield, NJ, Lisa (Carl) Veit of Oceanview, NJ and Kimberlee (Dave) Burgo of Ocean City, NJ; Loving grandmother of 5, including Vienna Cordier; Great-grandmother of 3.

Marion was a longtime resident of Collingswood where she taught Business Practices at Collingswood HS for 35 years.  She was an avid gardener.

Nancy L. Webster

(nee Lewi) On March 18, 2020; Age 91; longtime Haddonfield resident; Beloved wife for 61 years of the late Theodore L.; Loving mother of Linda (Wayne) Gilchrist of Townsend, DE and Ted Jr. (Donna) of Berlin, NJ; Devoted grandmother of Jennifer & Scott Gilchrist and Michael & Matthew Webster; Great-grandmother of 7; Dear sister of Melinda Beal of Kansas.

Nancy was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield and was a chairwoman and cook at Prime Timers for many years. Affectionately known as “Cookie Nana” to her grandchildren, Nancy took great joy in sharing her culinary talents with family and friends.  A member of the Haddonfield Garden Club, she was an avid gardener who was especially proud of her beautiful roses. She also delighted in her work at The Perfect Blend coffee shop for many years.

Regina Kauffmann

On March 17, 2020; Age 93; of Haddonfield, formerly of Philadelphia; Daughter of the late Eugene and Aida (nee Spicer).  She will be missed by many dear cousins.

Regina was a Social Worker for Children’s Aid Society of PA, in Philadelphia for many years.

Canning Rogers Childs, Jr.

On March 13, 2020, age 85, longtime Haddonfield resident passed away.

Roger graduated (9/438) from Shortridge High School, Indianapolis, Indiana.  He graduated magma cum laude (15/757) in Chemistry from Princeton 1957. Phi Beta Kappa and earned a Ph. D. degree in Chemistry from Harvard University in 1962.  He published two papers with Konrad Bloch who won the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1964 for his research on cholesterol biosynthesis. Roger had a top-secret security clearance when working on uranium enrichment.  Additionally, Roger earned an MBA degree from the Wharton School of Finance and Commerce in 1963 graduating first in his class. The dean of Wharton voted him his best investment student. Beta Gamma Sigma.

Roger was one of the founders of the bank equipment leasing industry, working for over 40 years for institutions such as Chase Manhattan Bank and CoreStates Financial.

He was the only six year President of The Philadelphia Securities Association. He was a life member of The Saint Andrew’s Society of Philadelphia, a member of the Pennsylvania Society of the Sons of the Revolution, and a member of The Society of the Sons of St. George.  He was a master Mason, a Scottish Rite 32^nd degree, an Eagle Scout and a member of Elm Club at Princeton. He was a direct descendant of Governor John Reading, first native born Governor of NJ, and an early Trustee of Princeton University. His grandfather, David Parrington Childs was an original founder of Acme Markets, and his other grandfather, Oscar Alfred Jose, was an original developer of Palm Beach, Florida. Among his ancestors were three Methodist ministers. He was related to Kirk Douglas, Michael Douglas, and Pete Conrad. He was also related to Thomas McKean and Francis Hopkinson, two signers of The Declaration of Independence.

He is survived by two children, Canning Rogers Childs, III (Jennifer Ann Beck Childs) and Catherine Jean Jose Childs Buzgo (Christopher Michael Buzgo) , and four grandchildren. (Brian James Buzgo, Emma Frances Buzgo, Benjamin Ethan Rogers Childs, and Mitchell Reading Rogers Childs).  He was pre-deceased by his sister Margaret.

William G. DeLong Jr., M.D.

William G. DeLong Jr., M.D., an accomplished orthopaedic surgeon, Network Chairman of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Luke’s University Health Network, former team physician for the Philadelphia Flyers, and widely respected doctor both nationally and internationally died from a sudden heart attack on Friday in Camden, NJ. He was 71.  He leaves his wife (Ginny) of 48 years, son Christian, daughter Lauren (Greg Ng) and grandson Joel Opdenhoff. Sisters Rosemary Duffy (William), Theresa Ackerman (Bruce) and Brother in Law Frederick Decker. His nephew Daniel Ackerman (Christina). Nieces Jennifer Duffy, Julia Higgins (Tim), Sarah Becker (Matt), Bonnie Baab, Lisa Dowd (Mike), Emma Ackerman and of course his faithful four legged companion Stella.

Dr. DeLong trained countless surgeons and was a genuine leader whose most recent position as Chairman at St. Luke’s oversaw the rapid growth and development of a community program into a large network of academic specialists. Always leading by example, he continued to take overnight trauma call responsibilities and maintained full surgical and clinic schedules up until his passing. He never turned a patient away, never said no to a colleague in need, and generously mentored countless new surgeons. His contributions continue to benefit patients and doctors around the world.

Bill was a lifelong Philadelphia and South Jersey resident – born, raised and educated in the Philadelphia area. An avid fan of all Philadelphia sports teams, it was hard to pull him away from any game. As an athlete himself he participated in triathlons and was very active in both personal competition and support of athletic endeavors at all levels.

Dr. DeLong was an accomplished drummer playing in the world champion Cardinal Dougherty High School Marching Band from 1962-66, and many happy years in drum and bugle corps, beginning with the Rising Sun Cadets, PAL Cadets and finally with the 1968-70 state and national champions Blue Rock.

William G. DeLong, Jr., M.D. completed undergraduate degrees in both Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from Temple University and St. Joseph’s University, respectively.  He graduated from the Temple University School of Medicine and completed his Orthopaedic Surgery residency at the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

He served many leadership roles at Cooper University Hospital, University of Pennsylvania Health System and Temple University Hospital. He was currently serving as the Network Chairman of the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Luke’s University Health Network. He also lent his expertise to the Philadelphia Flyers as well as multiple other professional, collegiate, and youth sports teams.

Dr. DeLong was an active member of professional organizations as well as a board member of the Orthopaedic Trauma Association, the Pennsylvania Orthopaedic Society, and Healing the Children of Philadelphia County.  He has been recognized with awards including Best Doctors in America, Top Physician in multiple publications, as well as teaching and research awards.

Dr. DeLong was a sought-after educator, not only taught at the bedside and in the clinic, but taught at a high level at training courses throughout his career, was course chairman and keynote lecturer around the country, and has written numerous book chapters and scientific publications.

Bill was also well-known for his “boots on the ground” humanitarian efforts during Hurricane Katrina and the Haiti earthquake and his leadership as Chairman of the Humanitarian Committee of the OTA.  He was a member of the Trauma Critical Care Team of the Department of Homeland Security for many years.  In addition to these professional service activities, he was active as a consultant to the Haddonfield Child Care Advisory Board, a member of the Haddonfield Little League Board of Directors, Cub Scout master, the Haddonfield Substance Abuse Task Force, and coach of the Haddonfield Junior Basketball Team.

Dr. DeLong’s family will receive friends at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Ave., Haddonfield, NJ on Wednesday evening, March 18, 6:00-8:00 pm and again on Thursday morning at 10:00 am at Christ the King RC Church, 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield. Following the greeting, all are invited to his Mass of Christian Burial at the Church beginning at 11:00 am. Interment private.

Brian Flynn

On March 10, 2020; Age 85; Of Villas, NJ; Loving father of Lisa (Reg, M.D.) Blaber and Brian Flynn (Christine Dubiel); Devoted grandfather of Brittanie and Olivia Blaber, Brian, Sam, Violet and Henry Flynn.  Brothers Jack and Kevin, and sisters JoAnn Chaconas, Dru Powers, and Kathleen McCullen (deceased).

Brian was born and raised in Drexel Hill, PA.  He graduated from Malvern Prep and Elkins Mortuary School.  However, it was only while working at The Newtown Squire in Newtown Square he found his life’s passion in the restaurant industry.  Risking his entire savings in 1978, he became a restaurant entrepreneur opening ‘Kwik Kook’ in Avalon, NJ.  He parlayed his success in this business to open his next restaurant, ‘Brian’s Waffle House,’ in Avalon in 1982.  For 20 years, Brian’s Waffle House was a “go-to” breakfast and lunch place for thousands of Avalon’s residents and visitors.  In 2001, he sold it with the intent to retire.  However, it took him less than a year to discover that retirement did not suit him.  In 2003, he bought a restaurant in Villas, NJ called ‘Mel’s Place.’  He could be found daily sitting at the cash register, happily greeting his customers. Brian’s early motto was “Kill them with kindness.”  He especially enjoyed getting to know his customers and many became lifelong friends.
