John J. Skay

On May 22, 2021, Age 74, of Laurel Springs, NJ; Beloved husband of Ruth (nee Webster); Loving father of Sherry Schlagle (Andrew) of Gloucester Twp., NJ and Kelly Gillies (Joseph) of Woolwich, NJ; Cherished grandfather of Brayden & Kylie Gillies and Dear brother of Thomas Skay and the late Margaret O’Brien & William Skay.

John proudly served in the US Navy during the Vietnam War.  He was a Machinist at the Phila. Naval Shipyard for 33 years.  John was a longtime member of the Haddonfield United Methodist Church, an avid golfer and most importantly a dedicated family man.

Joyce Walker Odendahl

(nee Warner) On May 13, 2021; Age 94; Longtime Haddonfield Resident; Devoted mother of Judith A. Walker of Clementon, NJ and Sandra J. (Glenn) King of Barrington, NJ; Cherished grandmother of  Andrew (Janine) King, Alexandria (Kevin) Steward, Ellyn King and Aimee (Jon) Pressman; Dear sister of Charles J. Warner, Jr. of Cape May, NJ.

Joyce was a longtime member of the Lutheran Church of Our Savior in Haddonfield.  She played the organ at St. Mary’s Home for many years.  Joyce had many hobbies and enjoyed sewing, crocheting, handcrafts and gardening.  She will be missed by all who knew her.

James Arthur Ruby

On April 30, 2021, Art Ruby, a Collingswood resident, passed away peacefully at age 102.  Art was the devoted husband of the late Beverly Elizabeth (nee Johnson) and the late Evelyn Mills (nee Kuenzel); beloved father of Barbara Oliver, dear step-father of Charles P. Mills (Kitty), Stuart D. Mills (Joan), and the late Nancy M. Thompson (Robert); beloved grandfather of Charles E. Oliver III (Jackie) and Christopher E. Oliver (Jessica), loving step-grandfather of 7; devoted great grandfather of Riley and Jordan Oliver, and caring step-great grandfather of 11.

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Haddonfield, Art graduated from Haddonfield Memorial High School in 1936.  A World War II veteran, he served in the Third Army under General Patton in the service division (1941-1946).  He also served in the Reserves reaching the rank of Captain.  After the war Art enjoyed a 46-year career with J. B. Van Sciver Furniture in Camden, NJ, working in the factory, sales, and management.

William (Bill) Leonard Hill

On April 18, 2021; Age 85; Of Englewood, FL and Cape May, NJ.  Beloved husband of 61 years and high school sweetheart of the recently departed Jean Louise (nee Pennick); Devoted father of Deborah (Joseph) Miller of Wilmington, DE, Cynthia (Michael Schlitt) Hill of Haddonfield, NJ and William II (Linda) Hill of Media, PA:  Loving grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 2; Dear brother of recently departed Selina McArdle (nee Hill).

Bill was born in Hazelton, PA on November 3, 1935 and moved to Delaware County where he attended Upper Darby High School, meeting his future wife, Jean, and graduating in 1954.  After serving in the US Army, Bill married Jean and began a 35-year career at General Electric, rising from the mailroom to president of the Management Association and overseeing the installation of electrical infrastructure in China.  After retirement, Bill spent his winters in Englewood, FL and summers in Cape May, NJ playing golf and spending time with family and friends.

Bill was a loyal fan of Penn State football and Phila. sports teams his entire life.  Bill was an active member of First Presbyterian Church of Cape May, Englewood Methodist Church, and the Springfield-Hanby PA Lodge 767 of the Freemasons.  Bill will be dearly missed by his family and many friends across the country.

James Richard Nelson

On April 10, 2021, age 74, a 7-year resident of Haddonfield, formerly of Scotch Plains, NJ for 31 years; Beloved husband for 52 years of Linda (nee Cox); Loving father of Christopher J. Nelson (Jessica) of Mt. Royal, NJ and Daniel S. Nelson (Margaret) of Haddon Twp., NJ; Doting granddad to Lydia, Anna & Jack; Caring Uncle Jim to his many nieces, nephews and their children; son of the late William T. Nelson, Sr. and Elma Aalto Nelson and brother of the late Joan Mattia & Tom Nelson.

Jim was raised in Bellmawr and a 1965 graduate of Triton Regional HS.  He held a B.S. degree from Rutgers Univ. (Camden), an M.S. degree from Rutgers (New Brunswick) and a J.D. from Rutgers (Camden).

Jim used his love of science, his fascination with medical and drug research, and his knowledge of the law in his long patent law career.  After working at a New York City patent law firm and being partner at a Westfield, NJ patent firm, he joined the Schering-Plough Corporation, now part of Merck & Co., as group patent counsel in 1985.  He retired from Schering 20 years later as staff vice president and chief patent counsel.

Ralph G. Berglund

Ralph G. Berglund of Medford, NJ (formerly of Cherry Hill, New Jersey for 53 years), died April 7, 2021, aged 88, at Medford Leas.  His beloved wife of 45 years, Marty Lou Mundt Berglund predeceased him in 2002.  Dearest father of Kirsten Sessinger of Collingswood, NJ, and Sigrid Kiep (Robert P. III) of Haddonfield, NJ and loving grandfather of Madeline and Gretchen Kiep.  He is also survived by his dear companion, Barbara Zimmerman of Medford, NJ.

Mr. Berglund was born in Atlantic City, NJ and grew up in nearby Margate City, graduating from Atlantic City High School.  He received a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from the Drexel Institute of Technology, and a Masters in Computers and Communications from the University of Pennsylvania.

After graduation from Drexel, he served as a commissioned officer with the Atlantic Fleet Naval Construction Battalions (the Seabees).  Upon his release he began his professional career at RCA in Camden, NJ where he worked on designs for early computers and related equipment.

He began a career of entrepreneurship, joining colleagues from RCA in starting one of the first companies to manufacture computer communications equipment.  In the mid-60s he launched a consulting firm which specialized in computer communication systems and business telecommunications.  He operated this company and its successors until the early 80s, serving such clients as American Express, duPont and other Fortune 500 companies. Among the firm’s projects were design support for the early VISA authorization networks, and for the first MasterCharge (now MasterCard) sales authorization center.  In recognition of his professional achievements, he was selected as the keynote speaker for the 1977 Data Communications Interface Conference and Exposition in Chicago, attended by some 15,000.

In 1968 he and James Palmer of Moorestown, NJ launched the Spectron Corporation which introduced and manufactured unique test equipment for computer communication systems.  The company was sold to Canada’s Northern Telecomm.  He then launched Systems Technology Forum with Richard Deal of Fairfax, VA, which provided industrial training seminars to thousands of people all over the country.  Mr. Berglund believed that this work was the most rewarding of his career as it helped people perform their jobs better and achieve advancement, and was beneficial to their employers as well.  He was awarded a Silver Plaque by the American Management Association for his seminars on telecommunications management.

In the early 80s, Mr. Berglund began to diversify into commercial real estate ventures.  As a part of this activity, he organized an investor group for the Dawn Beach Resort Hotel in St. Maarten and served on its board for many years and as Treasurer of the Corporation.  He successfully managed the conversion of the hotel to vacation ownership.  After the hotel’s destruction in a 1995 hurricane, he presided over the sale of the property for its shareholders.  He was also active in converting Chesapeake Bay marinas to condominium ownership, improving the marinas and making them family weekend destinations.  This period coincided with his family’s years of boating on the Chesapeake Bay.  He held a 100 ton Merchant Marine Master’s License.

In his retirement years, he served as a Trustee and Secretary of the Mordecai Island Land Trust, protecting a vital ecological habitat abreast of Beach Haven, NJ, where he and his family maintained a summer home.  He also returned to the hobby of photography which he had enjoyed since high school days.  His nature and landscape studies appeared frequently in juried shows and received many awards.  Beginning in his seventies he created and maintained two web sites to showcase his travel, scenic, art, and family photographs.  At age 86 he released an e-Book on Amazon entitled “Shooting for Better Images: Guidelines for Composition and Content”. He was a member of the Tavistock Country Club in Tavistock, NJ for 33 years, and has been an active member of the Little Egg Harbor Yacht Club in Beach Haven NJ since 2000.  He was a member of the South Jersey Camera Club and served on its Board, and was also a member of the Burlington County Radio Club.  He had a yearly subscription to the Philadelphia Orchestra and loved to listen to WRTI.   He was a volunteer at the Long Beach Island Historical Association in Beach Haven and gave walking tours of historical Beach Haven homes.

He will be remembered and loved for his love of his family, friends, his cats Pearl I and Pearl II, and his appreciation for the beauty of nature and the sea.

Lawrence M. Conroy

On April 4^th, 2021, Beloved brother of John Conroy, Jr. (Gretchen), Eileen Conroy (John Eckert), Nancy Conroy Leib (Barclay), Kathleen Conroy Byers (Scott), and Peter Eastman (Jennifer) and Step-brother of Joseph Eastman and Kevin Eastman (Wendy). Cousin and close friend of Woody Mills. Uncle to numerous nieces and nephews. He was pre-deceased by his father: John Conroy; mother: Molly Conroy Eastman; brother William Conroy; step-father: Joseph Eastman and step-brother Dennis Eastman.

Larry grew up in Haddonfield (HMHS ’74) and graduated from Rutgers University with a degree in History. He worked for several companies including Cendant Mortgage Corporation for many years. Larry was an avid reader of history. He loved tennis, trips to the Jersey shore, enjoyed gardening and was a huge fan of Illinois football and basketball. Louise M. Doughty

(nee Marlin) On April 5, 2021; Longtime Cherry Hill resident; formerly of Haddonfield.  Beloved wife of the late Norman R.; Dear mother of Diane D. Heppe (John) of Cherry Hill, Norma D. Kratt (Fred) of Georgia and Beverly D. Good (Chris) of Nevada.  Loving grandmother of Kimberly Heppe Jones (Kendall), Paula Heppe Miller (Jason) and Jeffrey Martin Green (Jennifer)and Eric Nevada Good (Hailey) and Lily Detroit Good (Paolo), and cherished great-grandmother “GG” of Madeline and Margaret Jones and Heidi and Logan Green.

Louise enjoyed her career as school secretary at Collingswood High School from 1970 to 1985, and after retiring there, enjoyed her part-time career at Macy’s for another 15 years.  Louise was a faithful member of Bethel Church on Springdale Rd. in Cherry Hill.  She also was an active volunteer at Wiley Christian Retirement Community in Marlton where she resided.  More than anything Louise loved her family, always hosting large family dinners and gatherings, she enjoyed summering in Ocean City, singing hymns and traveling.

Grace Troutman Benson

On March 31, 2021, Age 83 of Haddonfield, NJ, wife of the late Dabney Brooks Benson; Beloved mother of Grace Benson Robinson (David) of Haddonfield; Dear step-mother of Steven Benson, Brooks, Benson & the late Diana Benson; Cherished grandmother of Andrew Benson, Christian Benson & Jacob Robinson; Loving sister of Emeline Hunter of Haddon Twp., NJ and Treasured Aunt of William Hunter and Lori Hunter Curry.

Grace graduated from Vassar Univ. in 1959 and was active in the Alumni Assoc. She began a career in banking as the Trust Officer at Pennsylvania National Bank (PNB).  After starting her family, Grace became a substitute teacher for many years.  She was also incredibly active in the PTA.  She was a longtime Past Pres. Of the Pennsauken PTA, former Vice Pres. of the Second Region of NJ, as well as Past Pres. of the NJ State PTA.  Grace earned her Master’s in Divinity from Eastern College now Palmer Theological Univ. and became the Minister of the Riverside Methodist Church.  After passing the mandatory retirement age for Senior clergy, Grace joined Haddonfield United Methodist Church in a part-time capacity.  Additionally, Grace was an avid Master level Bridge player, member of the Lions Club of Camden, member of the Merchantville & Tavistock Country Clubs.

Sally Ann Oliphant

On March 29, 2021, Age 69, 24-year resident of Haddonfield, NJ, formerly a 22-year resident of Indianapolis, IN and of Chicago, IL for 2 years. Beloved sister of Susan (Donald) Noeller of Indianapolis, IN; Loving Aunt of Lynn (Steven) Roberts of Indianapolis, IN & Lee Anne (Kristopher) Whitaker of Largo, FL; Cherished great Aunt of Kasey (Justin) Burris of Fort Benning, GA, Lily (William) Whitely of Coatesville, IN, Lucas Roberts, Abigail Roberts, Lyndsey Roberts & Alexandra (Evan) Sharar, all of Indianapolis, IN and Treasured Great-Great Aunt of Ryan and Logan Burris of Fort Benning, GA, Branden Roberts & Averie Gentry both of Indianapolis, IN.
