Myles Coverdale Walker

On Feb. 11, 2023, age 87, beloved husband of Sarah Frances (nee Malcom); loving father of Pamela Brant (Steve) of Mt. Laurel, NJ, Gwynn DiPilla (Steven) of Haddonfield, NJ and Malcolm Walker (Bianca), and cherished grandfather of Annelies, Dean, Edwin and Danica Walker, Sarah (Ryan) Schradin, Stephanie (Jason) Simmons, Ryland (Jenelle) DiPilla and Aaron DiPilla.

Myles was a longtime member of the Christian Science Church of Haddonfield and had a passion for antique cars.  He restored and collected them, as well as judged numerous car shows throughout the US.

Myles’ family and friends are invited to his Memorial Service on Saturday, Feb. 25^th, 11 AM at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Ave., Haddonfield, NJ 08033.  Interment will be at the Haddonfield Baptist Cemetery.

Jolyne Dalzell

On February 12, 2023, after a lengthy illness; Devoted wife of the late Daniel Dalzell; cherished mother of Elizabeth (Ken Kramer) Dalzell & David (Michelle Plochere) Dalzell; adoring grandmother of Liesl, Hattie, Imogen & Gustave; dear sister of Thomas (Nancy) Rocereto.

Born and raised in Scranton, PA, Jolyne was a graduate of Trinity College, DC. She was an elementary school teacher in Cherry Hill before marrying and settling in Haddonfield where she lived for over 50 years as an active member of the community. She served on the Board of Education and was involved in many local groups and organizations including: Haddon Fortnightly, The Gourmet Club, The Questers, and The Haddonfield Garden Club. For many years she was the owner of The Children’s Shop, later taught ESL, and worked at the Rosenbach Museum in Philadelphia as Director of Visitor Services. She enjoyed theater, playing bridge, tennis, travel, and soft-shell crabs.

Jolyne’s family will receive friends on Thursday, February 23 from 4:00 PM – 7 PM at the Dalzell Home. A memorial mass will be celebrated at Old St. Joseph’s Church, 321 Willings Alley Philadelphia, PA on Friday, February 24 at 10:00 AM. For St. Joe’s parking information please click here.

Rita L. Bott

Rita L. Bott (nee Myers) born in Camden, NJ. A long-time Haddonfield resident, passed away at her home on Feb. 13, 2023, with her family by her side. Now she is at peace with her Lord.

Rita is survived by Lew, her loving husband of 64 years; her cherished children Suzanne Waltimyer of Haddonfield and David Bott of Haddon Heights; her dear sister Kay Cauley of Ocean City, her adoring grandchildren Ryan and Tyler Waltimyer and Brandon Bott. She will also be sorely missed by many nieces, nephews and friends.

Rita was a 1953 graduate of Haddon Heights High School, where she and Lew were high school sweethearts. After graduation she worked as a secretary at Campbell Soup, general offices in Camden. While raising her family, she was an active home room mother at the Elizabeth Haddon School for several years. She completed her working career as a Program Coordinator at Rutgers University Camden Psychology Department, retiring in 1998. She and Lew vacationed frequently in Mexico (her favorite was Puerto Vallarta), also on the West Coast, as well as weekends at their Pocono home.

Meghan C. Ranalli

Passed away on February 2, 2023. Meghan was the cherished daughter of Philip and Joanne (nee Tedeschi) Ranalli, Jr.; loving sister of Michael and Eric Ranalli; cherished granddaughter of Philip (Carol) Ranalli, Sr. (and the late Nancy Ranalli) and Reginald (the late Joann) Tedeschi. Meghan will also be sorely missed by many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Meghan’s family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 8^th from 9:30 – 10:45am at Christ the King Church, 200 Windsor Ave. Haddonfield, NJ where her mass of Christian burial will immediately follow at 11am. Foster Coffman Ergood, Esq.

Foster went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 1, 2023, just 43 days after Diana, his beloved high school sweetheart and devoted wife of 58 years, was called to Heaven. What a joyous reunion!

He spent his early years in Haddon Heights, as one of three sons and a daughter of the late Russell M. Ergood Jr. and Katherine (Kitty) Ergood. He is the younger brother of the late Russell M. Ergood III and the older brother of the late Laura Elizabeth and R. Laurence (Barbara). He grew from a firm foundation of Christian faith, and recalled each day as he left the house, his faithful mom would say, “Foster, remember your 5 G’s –God is good; He guides, guards and governs.” He lived by these words.

The family moved to Haddonfield in 1955. At Haddonfield Memorial High School, Foster became class President and achieved varsity letters for every year he played in football, basketball, and golf. He led the Golf Team, as Captain, to win the State Championship. He also finished second in the state, individually. As quarterback, Foster led his football team to many victories. He was also the point guard on the basketball team and held scoring records at the time. Though a fierce competitor; his faith kept him humble, grounded and a true gentleman. He has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at the high school for all three sports. A football injury prevented him from playing at the collegiate level. But, of all these achievements, the finest one was finding his future wife, Diana Douglass, in Driver’s Education class. They had a storybook beginning; Foster, being Captain and quarterback of the football team and Diana, being a very sweet and lovely homecoming Queen. Though they both had stunning outward appearances and many achievements, their common faith and beliefs are what made them even more beautiful. They graduated in the Class of ‘60.

In his next chapter, Foster focused on academics. He achieved a Bachelor of Arts at Duke University, Class of 1964. There, he played on the intramural golf club team and was a brother in the Kappa Sig Fraternity. He developed many lifetime relationships at Duke. He then completed his Juris Doctorate at Rutgers University Law School.

Foster and Diana married in 1964 and lived in Cherry Hill for over 55 years. They raised a beautiful, loving family of three children, Laura L. (Charlie) Ergood-Brown, Douglass F. (Danielle) Ergood, and Tara D. (Jack) Butz. Foster was an adoring grandfather to his eight grandchildren, Devyn, Blair, Shane, Joseph, Douglass Jr, Julia, Tyler, and Brooke. He will also be missed by his brother R. Laurence (Barbara) Ergood and numerous nieces and nephews, who loved their Uncle Fos. Lastly, he will be missed by his sister-in-law, Judith (Keith) Everett, many cousins, and dear friends.

Foster was a trailblazing attorney; he was fearless in the courtroom while representing his clients. He always said he loved fighting for the little guy. Starting a private practice in Haddonfield, he was true to his faith and sought righteousness, justice, and truth. One of his legal accomplishments was being involved in the appellate decision which set forth new rules in the service of process in NJ. He was also one of the first NJ attorneys to litigate Asbestosis claims in the state on behalf of injured plaintiffs.

Since a young boy, Foster was also a long-time member of Tavistock Country Club in Haddonfield, NJ. He played on the golf team for many years. There, he charitably served on the Board of Governors in many roles; the last being Membership Chairman. He enjoyed playing the back 9 with his son, Doug, after work. He also loved to entertain his wife, children, and grandchildren at the club for dinners, holidays, and club functions. He hosted two weddings at the club.

Foster was a one-of-a-kind, loving husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin, poppi, and friend. He was quick-witted, funny, a real chatterbox, and had a mind like a steel trap! He loved his cars and driving fast. One of his cars was a Burt Reynold’s signature edition Trans Am “Bandit.” He enjoyed traveling with his family and friends over the years. He was truly loved, admired, and adored by all.

Foster and Diana most loved spending time together supporting their children’s and their grandchildren’s numerous sporting events and activities over the many, many years. His grandchildren held such a special place in his heart. He loved conversing with them in person or on the phone. He would often text them on his FLIP phone using all capital letters!

Diana and Foster both battled health issues in the latter years of their lives. His relationship with the Lord gave him the strength to battle his own illnesses and to stay alive and care for his beloved wife to the very end.

Foster’s family will receive friends for a viewing on Friday, February 10^th from 6:30pm – 8:30pm at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Avenue, Haddonfield, NJ 08033. Joseph H. Hartmann

On January 18, 2023, age 62, formerly of Gibbsboro, NJ; Beloved son of Margaret “Peggy” & the late Joseph B. Hartmann; Loving brother of Edward (Teresa) Hartmann & Kimberly (Eric) Lindemuth and Dear Uncle to several nieces and nephew.

Joey graduated from Eastern Regional High School in 1978 and Lafayette College in 1982. He enjoyed athletics and played Baseball in College. He worked in the insurance industry as a claim adjuster. For many years and had his own insurance adjustment company. He retired from the insurance industry to help take care of his parents.

Carl E. Nieukirk

Carl E. Nieukirk of Marlton, NJ passed away on January 16, 2023, at the age of 88.  Carl is survived by his wife of 66 years, Elaine, and daughters Sharon (Ted DeWitt) Nieukirk, Barbara (John) Watkin, Carol Nieukirk, and grandchildren John Watkin, Benjamin Watkin, and Natalie DeWitt.

Carl grew up on a farm in Greenwich, NJ then began his career with Sun Oil Company training new managers.  In 1957 he moved to Haddonfield and opened Carl’s Sunoco, the longest continually operating service station in town.  He was a resident of Haddonfield for more than 40 years where he raised his family, was an active member of the First Baptist Church, and president two different times of the Haddonfield Lions Club. In his retirement, Carl enjoyed golf, travel, and spending winters on the gulf coast of Florida. He loved his family, Haddonfield, and sports, especially all the Philadelphia teams.

Carl’s family will receive friends on Saturday, January 28^th from 10-11:30 am at the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield, 124 Kings Highway East Haddonfield, NJ 08033; where a Lions Club service will occur at 11:45 am, and the religious services will follow. Francis X. Kernan

Died peacefully at his home on Saturday, January 7, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Fran was born in Camden, NJ in 1932, the fifth of ten children to Margaret and Eugene Kernan. He moved to Westmont, NJ at the age of ten, a town he called home for the remainder of his life.

Fran attended Holy Savior Elementary School, Camden Catholic High School, Rutgers University, and Colby College. He joined the United States Merchant Marines in 1949 and served during the Korean War. He was an avid traveler and what started as a trip to the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics turned into 20 years spent abroad. All the while, Fran journaled and sent letters home detailing his adventures. During his travels, he worked many jobs, including as an English teacher in Japan and Mexico, a ski lift operator in Europe, and a hotel manager in Rhodesia, to name a few. Fran spoke five languages. His travels took him across the entire United States and six continents.

After meeting at Compton’s Log Cabin and years spent traveling together, Fran and Catherine were married in Greenwich, England on October 20, 1977. They were blessed with five children and 12 grandchildren.

Fran was self-employed, founding Norwood Industries in 1989, and eventually transitioned the business to his son, Francis X. Kernan, Jr. when he retired at age 88.

Fran was a lifelong athlete. He was an avid golfer, skier, surfer, and tennis player. He loved his walks around town which often ended or included a stop at PJ’s or the Pour House.

Blessed with an abundance of family, friends, and Irish luck, Fran lived 91 great years. We are comforted to know Fran is reunited in heaven with his parents and eight siblings.

Beloved husband of 45 years to Catherine Kernan (Daniels). Dear father of Megan (Philipp) Hunold, Siobhan (Jonathan) Carrera, Francis X. (Krista) Kernan, Jr., Eugene (Jill) Kernan, and Nora (Gabriel) Poulides. Loving grandfather of Zoey Poulides, Lukas Hunold, Elle Hunold, Brayden Kernan, Jack Kernan, Benjamin Kernan, Genevieve Carrera, Constantine Poulides, Cora Carrera, Daniel Kernan, Alexandria Poulides, and Theodore Poulides. Fran is also survived by and will be sadly missed, by his sister, Brigid Kernan, as well as his sister-in-law, Brenda Kernan, and brother-in-law, William Fynes. He was predeceased by his siblings: Msgr. Eugene, Jack (Josephine), Agnes (Robert), Larry, Joan, Patrick (Jeanette), Terrance, and Bernadette.

A visitation will be held at Kain-Murphy funeral home (Haddonfield, NJ) Friday, January 13, 2023, from 6:30-9:00 pm. Saturday, January 14, 2023, a visitation will be held at Holy Saviour Church (Haddon Township, NJ) beginning at 9 am with a Mass to follow at 11:30 am. In lieu of flowers, charitable donation’s in Fran’s name may be made to the Salvation Army or the Maryknoll Missionaries.

Frances W. Friedrich

(nee Wagner) On January 4, 2023. Frances was the devoted wife of the late William Friedrich; cherished mother of Allen, Bruce (Cheryl), and Carl (Marie); adoring grandmother of Owen, Bryan, Joshua, Todd, Matthew, Gregory, Christopher, Teresa, and Diane; great-grandmother of 19.

Frances was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Haddonfield for close to 70 years.  As a member, she sang in the choir for over 40 years, was a bell ringer, Sunday school teacher, Elder, and was involved in many other church-related activities.  She also enjoyed gardening, bowling, square dancing with her husband Bill, and watching her children and their families grow.

Elwood B. Mills, III

On December 27th, 2022, Elwood, known to all as Woody, passed away and went home to be with the Lord. He was pre-deceased by his father Elwood B. Mills Jr. and his mother Nancy Macdonald Mills.

Woody spent most of his life in Haddonfield and then later lived in Cherry Hill. A graduate of Haddonfield Memorial High School (1971), he later received his BA degree from Mount St. Mary’s University. Woody worked in several endeavors but found a true calling in his profession as a CNA at Silver Health Care where he was helpful to so many others. As a member of Living Faith Christian Center, Woody enjoyed serving in many capacities and was a member of the men’s group, nursing, and prison ministries. His kindness endeared him to his close friends and all those he encountered. Woody enjoyed reading, swimming, working out at the gym, and fishing at the Jersey shore. He eagerly followed the Philadelphia Eagles games and always loved a good Italian meal.

He leaves behind several beloved cousins and his Living Faith church family.
