Dr. McDermott graduated from St. Joseph’s University, continued on to Thomas Jefferson Medical School, and completed his residency at St. Michael’s Hospital in Newark, NJ, where he met Peggy. His medical career spanned 5 decades at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden. He also cared for folks at St. Mary’s Nursing Home in Cherry Hill, NJ, was the official doctor for Campbell’s Soup Co. and was one of last physicians to make house calls – where he would occasionally be paid in peppers, corn, tomatoes and crabs. He served on the medical board of HQSI since 1987, and remained active into this year. In retirement, Vince volunteered his time and knowledge at Project Hope, Community Health Practice and Guadalupe Family Services, all in Camden. Vince was one of the founders of St. John of God Community Services in Westville, NJ. The ultimate “anything for the family” man, he spent summers announcing for Saturday morning swim meets and winters on the ski slopes. For the last 25 years, he loved people-watching from his deck in Sea Isle City. He traveled with Peggy extensively, visiting every continent. While Dr. McDermott took the care of his patients very seriously, he loved making people laugh. Well known for arriving to any celebration in costume, he was the life of every party.
