Major General Michael David Strong III, M.D. 

Major General Michael David Strong III, M.D.  surrounded by his family, passed away on December 6, 2022.

Michael grew up in Silva, NC.  Always brilliant, he excelled at St. Andrew School for Boys in Sawanee, TN.   Michael attended the University of Pennsylvania and was a member of Phi Sigma Kappa.  Michael then attended Jefferson University Medical School.

After college, Michael served in the Vietnam War.  It was there he was awarded the Silver Star for valor in 1968. Michael served in the military for 29 years.  Rising to the rank of Major General, and was highest ranking medical officer in Operation Desert Storm.

Dr. Strong was a renowned Cardio Thoracic Surgeon.  He was also the inventor of medical devices. Michael honed his medical skills on the battlefields of Vietnam and brought that hard won knowledge back to his adopted home of Philadelphia.  A highly regarded CT surgeon at Hahnemann University Hospital where he performed over 1000 open heart surgeries, Dr. Strong is credited with teaching many of the top CT surgeons throughout the country that continue his legacy into the future.

Michael enjoyed spending time with his family, especially in Avalon.  He was a member of the Avalon Yacht Club.  He loved watching his adoring grandchildren play by the pool and always had time for an Avalon Freezer.   On holiday mornings, he would make his special apple cinnamon pancakes.

Michael was a long-time member of the Union League of Philadelphia, where he enjoyed fine wine, great food, and wonderful friends.  It was at the Union League, he would often spend quality time with his wife, Maryann.  He was also a member of the Riverton Country Club.  Michael was known to be fond of golfing, Corvettes and the opera.  He was an avid reader and enjoyed doing crossword puzzles.

Hippocrates said “where the art of medicine is loved, there is also a love of humanity.” This is never truer than with Dr. Strong.  He cared for all of his patients.  Michael lived a long and impressive life surrounded by family and friends; however, he also should be remembered for the centuries of time he gave other people and their families.

Precedent in death by his father Michael, mother Pearl and brother Jimmy.  His wife Maryann was the love of his life.  Also survived by daughters Danielle (Pete Gabriele), Rachel (Michael Hutchinson), Laura (Justin Weathers) and sons Matthew (Victoria Nestore), John Strong (Jennifer), Michael D Strong IV.  Proud grandfather of 13, Luke, Marianne, Vivienne, Penelope, Scarlett, Eloise, Abigail, Anna, Jack, Sadie, William, Vivienne, Alexandra.

Dr. Strong’s Family will receive friends on Tuesday, Dec. 13th, 9-10:45 AM, at Christ the King RC Church 200 Windsor Ave., Haddonfield, NJ; where his Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11 AM.  Interment will be at Arlington National Cem. at a later date.  In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in honor of Dr. Strong and his years of Military Service may be made to www.uscadetcorps.org
