James H. Hetherington
Mr. Hetherington passed away at the age of 85 on October 17, 2024. Jim was the devoted husband of Jean (nee Van Zandt); cherished father of Irene Hetherington DeLong (Douglas); adoring grandfather of Emma and Will DeLong; dear brother of Jean Hetherington Augustin. Jim will be sorely missed by many nieces and nephews.
Jim was a 55-year resident of Haddonfield. He was the Superintendent of Gloucester City Schools for many years. Jim fought for the welfare of children through his participation and leadership as a member of the Camden County Ethics Commission, as Treasurer of the New Jersey Urban Schools Superintendents Assoc., as chair of the CPAC Advisory Council of the Camden County Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS) and as chair of “Community and Family Services of Gloucester City”.
He was also a certified Lay Speaker in the Southern New Jersey Methodist Conference and, later, a Deacon at Tenth Presbyterian Church in Phila. Jim also served many years as a member and chair of the Young Life South Jersey Adult Advisory Committee.
Jim was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and friend to many. He loved helping and serving others, preferably anonymously. Jim loved and served his Lord for many years. There is rejoicing in Heaven at the homecoming of one of God’s saints.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a brief prayer service on Tuesday, October 29th at 1:45pm at Kain-Murphy Funeral Services, 15 West End Ave. Haddonfield, NJ; where a greeting period will immediately follow from 2pm-3pm. Interment private.
Additionally, All are invited to Jim’s Memorial Service on Saturday, November 9th at 11am at the Tenth Presbyterian Church, 1701 Delancey St, Philadelphia, PA 19103 (corner of 17th and Spruce Streets).
In lieu of flowers, charitable donations in James’ name may be made to the Tenth Presbyterian Church or Young Life.
